Via IGN, comiXology have announced “She’s Running on Fumes,” a crime series written by Dennis Hopeless, with art by Tyler and Hilary Jenkins, and lettering from Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. Inspired by Hopeless’s own parents, the book takes place in Deepwater, Missouri, in 1984, and tells the story of a woman who discovers her husband is a drug trafficker. After he is injured in a car accident, she is forced to turn to crime herself to keep their family afloat.

Hopeless, whose real name is Dennis Hallum, states, “When I was three years old, my mother started a chop shop with a half-wit junkyarder named Corn Dog. Dad was the criminal. Mom had never broken a law in her life, but with him brain-damaged, $50,000 of cocaine gone missing and hospital bills piling up, grand theft auto was our only hope. ‘She’s Running on Fumes’ is based on the true story of how my mom lied, cheated and stole her way through dad’s tire fire and the freedom she found out the other side.”

He continues, “The story is based on family stories and my father’s near-fatal accident from when I was a toddler. As I grew older, details were added that made it clear my father was a criminal and many of the events of my childhood were driven by his criminal dealings. The seeds of the idea came from asking my mother about these old stories as an adult and getting the real dirt.”

The first issue will be released on Amazon on Tuesday, February 6. Like all comiXology Originals, it will be available at no extra cost to Prime or Kindle Unlimited subscribers, and will presumably receive a print release from Dark Horse down the line. It was not stated how long the series will run for. You can check out a preview in the meantime over at IGN.
